Business-ready 14 inch laptop

The Dell Latitude 5420 is a new 14 inch business laptop with a 1920 x 1080 non-touch display, an 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1145G7 vPro processor, 16 GB DDR4 3200 memory and a 256 GB PCIe NVMe SSD. Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This configuration suits professionals and students who need a lightweight managed device with Thunderbolt 4 dock support, wired RJ-45 Ethernet and dual 4K external display capability. Buyers who need a larger screen, dedicated graphics, a touchscreen or more than 256 GB of internal storage should consider other models.

Deciding specification: 256 GB PCIe NVMe SSD

The single specification that decides fit is the 256 GB PCIe NVMe SSD. It determines whether the operating system, business applications and active project files fit without external drives. If the workload requires more local capacity, this unit will not meet the need.

Questions about this item

How hot or loud does the i5-1145G7 get when running all day?

The 42 WHr battery and 65 W Type-C adapter keep thermals modest for mainstream workloads; fan noise rises only under sustained Turbo up to 4.40 GHz.

What must I already own to use the Thunderbolt 4 ports?

You need Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 cables and peripherals — docks, monitors or storage — that support DisplayPort Alt Mode and Power Delivery.

Will my older USB 3.0 devices work with the USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports?

Yes, both USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports are backward compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 devices; one also provides PowerShare charging while the laptop is off.
