Rugged 14-inch laptop for field work

The Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged is a 14.0 inch business laptop built to withstand harsh environments. It runs Windows 10 Professional 64 bit on an Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core processor with a base speed up to 3.60GHz and 15W TDP. The system includes 8GB 2400MHz DDR4 memory and a 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Class 40 solid-state drive.

Upgrade from standard business notebooks

This unit replaces conventional office laptops when work takes place outdoors, in vehicles or on job sites where dust, vibration and temperature swings are daily factors. The sealed internal RGB backlit keyboard and rugged chassis tolerate conditions that would disable a standard thin-and-light design. The jump is worth it when downtime from a broken consumer-grade device costs more than the premium for a ruggedised platform.

Limits of the integrated graphics and ports

Intel UHD Graphics drives the 1920x1080 WVA anti-glare non-touch panel but lacks discrete video memory, so 3D rendering and heavy GPU compute remain impractical. The 51 Whr 3-cell battery supports ExpressCharge yet capacity is finite for all-day field use without mains access. Connectivity covers 802.11ac wireless, gigabit RJ-45, HDMI, USB 3.0 Type C, three USB 3.0 Type A, SD card, SIM slot and a serial port for legacy equipment.

Questions about this item

What are the exact height, width and depth measurements for the Latitude 5420 Rugged chassis?

The chassis measures 1.29 inches (32.88 mm) high, 13.66 inches (347 mm) wide and 9.63 inches (244.5 mm) deep.

What is the correct order to seat the M.2 PCIe NVMe Class 40 SSD so the retaining screw engages?

Insert the drive at an angle into the M.2 slot, press it down flat, then fasten the single retaining screw; skipping the screw leaves the drive unsecured and the system will not boot.

Which user-replaceable components will need attention after extended use?

The 51 Whr 3-cell battery and the removable primary SATA storage bay drive are the only field-replaceable parts designed for later service.
