Product identity

The Dell Latitude 5490 is a 12.5 inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i5-8350U processor running at 1.70 GHz. It ships with 8 GB of DDR4 memory and a 500 GB SATA hard drive. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed, making it ready for office tasks, web browsing and light multitasking out of the box.

Installation and common issues

The system arrives with the operating system already configured, so the only setup required is user account creation and driver updates via Dell SupportAssist. Memory upgrades are straightforward thanks to two accessible DDR4 slots supporting up to 32 GB total. The main limitation is the mechanical hard drive, which slows boot and application launch compared with solid-state storage.

Sustained workload behaviour

Under continuous load the integrated Intel HD Graphics 620 shares system memory, so graphics-intensive tasks reduce available RAM for other processes. The 1366 x 768 anti-glare panel peaks at 200 nits, which is adequate indoors but dim in bright environments. The dual-band Wireless-AC 8265 and Gigabit Ethernet provide stable connectivity for long sessions, while the lithium-ion battery is guaranteed to hold a charge.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the Intel Core i5-8350U and 8 GB DDR4 are running correctly after setup?

Open Task Manager's Performance tab to verify the processor shows four cores at 1.70 GHz base speed and that 8 GB DDR4 is detected; run Windows Update and Dell SupportAssist to install the latest drivers for the Intel HD Graphics 620 and Intel Dual-Band Wireless-AC 8265.

What comes in the box and what must I buy separately?

The box contains the Latitude 5490, a 65 W power adapter and a pre-installed Windows 10 Pro 64-bit licence; no manual, external mouse, carrying case or additional memory modules are included.

Should I choose the 500 GB SATA drive or add more memory up to 32 GB DDR4?

The 500 GB SATA drive is the only storage fitted; if you need faster boot times or more capacity, plan to replace it with a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, while the two DDR4 slots let you expand from 8 GB to 32 GB total for heavier multitasking.
