Business laptop for mobile professionals

The Dell Latitude 5490 is a 14.0-inch laptop built for professionals who need a reliable Windows 10 Pro machine away from the desk. Its Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor reaches 4.20 GHz turbo frequency for responsive multitasking across office applications. The 256GB SSD and 8GB memory provide quick boot times and smooth everyday performance. A non-touch HD display keeps the focus on productivity.

Thermals and power in daily use

The compact chassis measures 0.8 inches at the front and weighs 3.52lb, so fan noise stays moderate during typical document and browser workloads. Integrated graphics keep power draw lower than discrete alternatives, helping the battery last through meetings. The 1.90 GHz base clock ensures consistent performance without aggressive thermal throttling. Surface temperatures remain comfortable for lap use during extended sessions.

Ports and accessories expand utility

Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort over Type-C, VGA and RJ-45 cover legacy and modern peripherals without dongles. An SD card slot and audio combo jack support media workflows on the go. The optional Dell Business Dock WD15 adds single-cable desk setup with extra video outputs and charging. A Noble wedge lock slot secures the hardware in shared spaces.

Questions about this item

How do I install a second storage drive in the Latitude 5490, and which step is often missed?

The chassis has no 2.5" bay; only the M.2 slot used by the 256GB drive exists, so a second drive cannot be added without removing the original.

What maintenance will the 8GB memory configuration need later?

The 8GB module is not user-accessible; any memory fault requires a board-level service rather than a simple DIMM swap.

Which limit appears first during a long compile on the i7-8650U?

The 15 W quad-core chip hits its thermal ceiling before the 4.2 GHz turbo can be sustained, so clocks drop to the 1.9 GHz base.
