Business laptop for mobile professionals

The Dell Latitude 7490 is a 14.0 inch Windows 10 Pro notebook built around a quad-core Intel Core i5-8350U processor running at 1.7 GHz. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a 128 GB M.2 SATA solid-state drive. The non-touch FHD panel shows 1920 x 1080 resolution. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles the display output.

Sustained workload behaviour

The low-power U-series chip and integrated graphics share a thermal envelope designed for thin chassis. Under continuous multi-core load the processor will throttle to stay within its power limit, so extended compiles or large spreadsheet recalculations run slower than short bursts. The 32 GB DDR4 capacity keeps heavy browser sessions and virtual machines resident without swapping to the modest 128 GB drive.

Build, connectors and daily use

Grade B units show visible cosmetic blemishes such as scratches on the black casing. Connectivity includes three USB 3.0 ports, one USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port with PowerShare, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, a microSD reader and a webcam. Wireless uses 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2. The USB-C port supports docking and charging peripherals, while HDMI drives external projectors or displays for meetings.

Questions about this item

How loud does the Intel Core i5-8350U get when the Latitude 7490 runs all day?

The quad-core 1.7 GHz processor uses integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620, so there is no discrete GPU fan; typical office workloads keep the single system fan at low speed.

What cables or docks must I already own to use the USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 PowerShare and HDMI ports?

A USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 cable or dock for charging and data, plus a standard HDMI cable for external displays; both ports are built in.

Will my older USB 3.0 peripherals work at full speed on the three USB 3.0 ports?

Yes, the three USB 3.0 ports are backward compatible, so existing USB 3.0 devices run at their rated 5 Gbps speed.
