Business laptop for mobile professionals

The Dell Latitude 7490 is a 14.0 inch touchscreen notebook powered by an Intel Core i7-8650U processor with four cores and eight threads. It comes with 32GB of DDR4 memory and a 512GB NVMe PCIe solid-state drive. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed for immediate productivity.

Thermals noise and power in daily use

The 15W quad-core chip runs cool during typical office tasks such as document editing, web browsing and video calls. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles the 1920 x 1080 display without a discrete GPU, keeping fan activity low and power draw modest for longer battery life.

Sustained load behaviour

Under continuous multi-threaded workloads the 15W thermal envelope will throttle clock speeds to maintain safe temperatures. The integrated graphics share system memory, so heavy rendering or large datasets may hit the 32GB ceiling. Buyers who need sustained high frequencies or discrete GPU power should consider other form factors.

Questions about this item

How do I replace the M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD in the Latitude 7490, and which step do people often miss?

Remove the bottom cover screws, lift the cover, unscrew the single M.2 retention screw, then slide the 512GB drive out at an angle. People often forget to re-seat the retention screw before snapping the cover back on.

What maintenance will the 32GB DDR4 memory and 512GB NVMe SSD need over time?

The soldered 32GB DDR4 cannot be upgraded, so no memory maintenance is required. The removable M.2 NVMe SSD can be swapped later if capacity runs out, but the drive itself has no serviceable parts.

At what point does the 15W Core i7-8650U throttle during a long compile or render?

The quad-core 1.90GHz chip with 8MB cache will hit its 15W power limit first, causing clock speeds to drop once the cooling solution saturates under sustained multi-threaded load.
