Business laptop for mobile professionals

The Dell Latitude 7490 is a 14-inch business laptop built around an Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor with 8 MB cache and a 15 W TDP. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 2400 memory and a 512 GB M.2 2280 SATA SSD running Windows 11 Pro. The 1920 x 1080 non-touch anti-glare display suits office work and travel.

Thermals noise and power in daily use

The 15 W processor and integrated UHD Graphics keep heat output modest during typical productivity tasks. A 4-cell 60 WHr battery supplies mobile power while the included AC adapter handles charging. Fan noise stays low for standard document editing, web browsing and video conferencing workloads.

Accessories that change the experience

A backlit dual-pointing keyboard and integrated webcam with microphone support late-hours work and remote meetings. Connectivity includes HDMI 1.4, DisplayPort over USB Type-C with optional Thunderbolt 3, three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (one PowerShare), an SD 4.0 card reader, RJ45 Ethernet, Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 8265 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1.

Questions about this item

How do I install additional DDR4 2400 memory in the Dell Latitude 7490, and what step is often missed?

Remove the base cover, insert the SO-DIMM at an angle into the slot, then press down firmly until the retention clips click; the step often missed is fully seating both clips so the module sits flat.

Which component in the Latitude 7490 will need replacement first, and what specification should I match?

The 4-cell 60 WHr battery degrades with charge cycles; replace it with a Dell 4-cell 60 WHr pack to maintain the original runtime and fit.

What thermal limit appears first on the i7-8650U during sustained loads in this 14" chassis?

The 15 W processor hits its thermal ceiling quickly in the thin chassis, causing clock speeds to drop from the 3.90 GHz turbo to protect the 4-core CPU.
