Compact business desktop

The Dell OptiPlex 7040 SFF is a small-form-factor desktop built for office and home-office workloads. It ships with a 64-bit quad-core Intel Core i5 6500 processor running at 3.20 GHz, 64GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB SSD. Windows 10 Pro comes pre-installed and activated without bloatware. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 drives two DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI port.

Ideal for general productivity.

This system suits users who need a quiet, space-saving PC for web browsing, document editing, email and line-of-business applications. The generous 64GB of memory gives plenty of headroom for multitasking and virtual machines. Buyers who require a discrete graphics card for 3D rendering, video editing or modern gaming should look elsewhere, as the chassis and power supply do not support add-in cards. The lack of VGA or DVI ports also means older monitors need an active adapter.

64GB memory and 1TB SSD provide ample headroom

The 64GB DDR4 configuration handles dozens of browser tabs, large spreadsheets and multiple virtual machines without paging. The 1TB SSD offers fast boot times and enough capacity for the operating system, applications and a substantial working set of files. Storage-intensive users working with large media libraries or databases will eventually need external or network storage. The integrated graphics shares system memory, so extremely graphics-heavy tasks will exhaust both compute and memory resources quickly.

Questions about this item

Which display cables or adapters do I need to connect my existing monitors to the two DisplayPort and one HDMI outputs?

The system provides two DisplayPort and one HDMI port with no VGA or DVI connectors, so older monitors will require a DisplayPort-to-VGA, DisplayPort-to-DVI or HDMI-to-VGA adapter depending on the monitor input.

Will my legacy USB 2.0 peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse or printer work with the six USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports?

All ten USB ports are backward compatible, so USB 2.0 devices plug directly into any USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port and function normally.

How can I verify that the integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 is active and using the installed 64GB DDR4 after first boot?

Open Windows Device Manager, expand Display adapters and confirm Intel HD Graphics 530 is listed, then open Task Manager > Performance > Memory and check that 64 GB appears as the total installed memory.
