Dell OptiPlex 990 desktop overview

The Dell OptiPlex 990 is a business-class desktop computer powered by an Intel Quad-Core i5 processor. It ships with 4GB of DDR3 memory and a 500GB hard drive for everyday storage. A DVD-RW optical drive and Windows 10 Professional 64-bit are included. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 handles basic video output.

Upgrade path from older office PCs

This system replaces ageing desktops that still run on dual-core processors or mechanical drives alone. The jump is worthwhile when moving from 2GB of memory to the installed 4GB DDR3 configuration. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit support ensures compatibility with current business software. The Q67 Express chipset provides legacy expansion slots for specialised cards.

Suitable for general office and legacy tasks

Buyers needing a ready-to-use machine for document work, email and web apps will find this unit adequate. The included keyboard, mouse and Wi-Fi USB adapter allow immediate deployment. It is not suited for users who require dedicated graphics performance or more than 4GB of memory. Buyers who want modern high-speed storage interfaces should look at alternative platforms.

Questions about this item

What motherboard form factor does the OptiPlex 990 use for its 240-pin DDR3 memory slots?

The system uses a DIMM 240-pin form factor for its 4GB of DDR3 memory, matching the standard desktop layout used in this chassis.

Which expansion slots must be free to add a graphics card or extra I/O to the OptiPlex 990?

The board provides PCI and PCI Express x16 slots; the x16 slot is the one needed for a discrete graphics upgrade, while PCI handles legacy cards.

When will the pre-loaded Windows 7 Professional image need attention after the Windows 10 Pro upgrade?

The Windows 7 Pro image remains on the recovery partition; it only requires action if you choose to restore the factory state instead of keeping Windows 10 Pro.
