Business desktop with Intel quad-core i5

The Dell OptiPlex 990 is a compact business desktop powered by an Intel quad-core i5 processor and 8GB of DDR3 memory. It ships with Windows 10 Professional 64-bit pre-installed and includes a USB keyboard and mouse. A 500GB hard drive and DVD-RW optical drive provide local storage and media access. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 handles standard display output.

Connectivity and expansion for office use

The chassis offers PCI and PCI Express x16 slots alongside parallel, serial and multiple USB 2.0 ports for legacy and modern peripherals. Gigabit Ethernet via the Intel 82579LM controller and a bundled Wi-Fi USB adapter give flexible network options. Active power factor correction and a security lock slot support managed deployment. The DIMM 240-pin memory layout allows straightforward RAM upgrades.

Replaces older workstations for everyday

This system upgrades from legacy desktops that struggle with modern 64-bit applications and multi-tasking workloads. The jump is worth it when moving from dual-core machines with 4GB or less of memory to a quad-core platform with 8GB DDR3. Buyers who need solid-state speed, discrete graphics or newer CPU architectures will find this configuration does not meet those requirements.

Questions about this item

Which USB standard does the OptiPlex 990 use, and what speed does it limit peripherals to?

The system provides USB 2.0 ports, so every attached device runs at the 2.0 signalling rate.

What chassis clearance and mounting points are required for the Dell OptiPlex 990 desktop?

The tower fits a standard ATX footprint and uses four rear thumbscrews; no tool-less rails or proprietary brackets are needed.

How is the pre-loaded Windows 10 Pro activated on this OptiPlex 990, and which step do buyers often miss?

Windows 10 Pro activates automatically via the embedded BIOS licence; the step people skip is connecting to the internet so the digital entitlement can bind.
