Dell OptiPlex 990 Mini Tower desktop PC

This Dell OptiPlex 990 Mini Tower is a compact desktop computer built around an Intel 2nd Gen i5-2400 processor running at 3.10 GHz. It comes with 16 GB of DDR3 memory, a 128 GB solid-state drive paired with a 2 TB hard drive, and Windows 10 Professional 64-bit pre-installed. A DVD±RW drive, USB keyboard and USB mouse are included in the box.

Home office and student workstation use

The system suits students, home-office users and anyone needing a ready-to-run Windows 10 desktop for web browsing, document editing and light multitasking. Buyers who want more memory than the 16 GB DDR3 maximum, faster graphics than integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000, or a smaller form factor should look at something else.

265 W power supply unit

The chassis houses a 265 W power supply, which sets the ceiling for any future graphics card or additional drives you might add. Check the power budget of any upgrade against this 265 W limit before purchasing.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 128 GB SSD or the 2 TB HDD as my main drive?

Use the 128 GB SSD for Windows 10 Pro and your most-used programs so the system boots and launches quickly, then keep the 2 TB HDD for large files such as videos, photos and backups.

What does the i5-2400 3.10 GHz figure mean once the PC is running?

The quad-core processor runs at a base 3.10 GHz and can reach 3.4 GHz with Turbo Boost when fewer cores are active, giving responsive performance for everyday multitasking and office workloads.

What does the Gigabit Ethernet port cap at in practice?

The integrated Gigabit Ethernet connector limits wired network throughput to a maximum of 1 Gbps, which is the standard ceiling for this interface on the OptiPlex 990.
