Blade Server for Dense Compute

The Dell PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors, each running 18 cores at 3.0 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. Installed memory is 32 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC across four slots, leaving room to scale toward the platform maximum of 1.5 TB.

Chassis and Memory Compatibility

Verify that your rack enclosure is a PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis with available half-height blade bays. The server uses LGA 3647 sockets and DDR4 registered ECC DIMMs across 16 slots, so any memory upgrades must match that type and speed. Storage bays accept 2.5-inch SATA or SAS drives and the PERC H330 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 configurations.

Network and Management Integration

A Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb network daughter card provides high-speed connectivity within the chassis fabric. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote management, monitoring and automation without requiring a local console. The Matrox G200 graphics controller with 8 MB video memory handles basic display output. No operating system is included, so factor in OS licensing and installation for your deployment.

Questions about this item

What comes in the box and what must be bought separately?

The blade includes two Xeon Gold 6154 processors, four 8 GB DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC modules, a PERC H330 controller, two 1.92 TB SATA SSDs, a Broadcom 57810S-K dual-port 10 Gb daughter card and iDRAC9 Enterprise. Front bezel, ready rails, chassis and operating system are not included.

Which installed capacity should I choose between the 32 GB DDR4 and the 1.5 TB maximum?

Start with the fitted 32 GB if workloads fit in that footprint; the board has 16 DDR4 slots and supports up to 1.5 TB, so you can add registered ECC modules later without replacing the originals.

What does the 3.0 GHz base and 3.7 GHz turbo mean once the blade is running in a chassis?

Each of the two 18-core Xeon Gold 6154 CPUs runs at 3.0 GHz base and can lift to 3.7 GHz turbo under load, giving 36 total cores for virtualization or HPC tasks inside a PowerEdge MX or M1000e enclosure.
