Dell PowerEdge R440 1U server

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rack server built for dense data-centre deployments. Two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors run at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores each and a 3.2 GHz turbo. Eight 16 GB DDR4-2400 ECC modules provide 128 GB of registered memory. The PERC H330 controller manages eight 600 GB 10K SAS drives in 2.5-inch bays. Dual 550 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Express complete the platform.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This server suits IT teams that need high core counts and redundant storage in a single rack unit. Virtualization hosts, database nodes and cloud workloads benefit from the 24 total cores and hardware RAID. Buyers who need more than eight drive bays or who require GPU acceleration should consider other form factors. Organisations without rack infrastructure will also need a different chassis style.

Specification that decides fit

The eight-bay 2.5-inch SAS backplane paired with the H330 controller defines the storage capacity and performance ceiling. Eight 600 GB 10K drives deliver a fixed raw capacity and spindle speed that cannot be expanded internally. If the workload demands larger volumes, SSD tiers or external arrays, this chassis will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

How much power do the two 550 W platinum supplies draw when the R440 runs all day?

Each supply is rated at 550 W with platinum efficiency; actual draw depends on workload but the pair provides redundant 550 W capacity for continuous operation.

Which rails or mounting hardware must I already have to install this 1U server?

The front bezel and ready rails are not included, so you need compatible 1U rack rails for a Dell PowerEdge R440 chassis.

Will the PERC H330 controller recognise the 600 GB 10 K SAS drives I already own?

Yes, the H330 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller supports Dell Enterprise 600 GB 10 K SAS 2.5" drives natively.
