Compact 1U Server for Dense Rack Deployment

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rack server built for space-efficient data centre deployment. It targets organisations running virtualisation, cloud workloads, and database applications that need processing density without sacrificing expandability. Dual Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors and 512 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC memory deliver the compute foundation for business-critical tasks.

Storage Throughput Limited by HBA330 Controller

Eight 1.92 TB SATA SSDs connect through the PERC HBA330 controller operating at 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA speeds. The SATA 6 Gb/s interface on each drive sets the practical ceiling for sequential throughput, while the controller's lack of hardware RAID restricts advanced data-protection features. PCIe expansion slots remain available for additional networking or storage controllers if the onboard dual-port Gigabit Ethernet proves insufficient.

Replaces Older 2U Systems When Density Outweighs

This configuration suits teams consolidating legacy 2U platforms where rack space is at a premium and the 12-core-per-socket design matches or exceeds prior thread counts. The jump is worthwhile when workloads fit within eight 2.5-inch drive bays and do not require the larger memory capacity or additional PCIe slots found in taller chassis. Buyers needing more than eight drives or higher single-thread frequency should evaluate larger form factors.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 512GB DDR4-2400 configuration or look for a different memory capacity?

This unit ships with 512GB DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory across 16 modules of 32GB each, filling the available slots for immediate high-capacity operation.

What does the 2.3GHz base clock with 3.2GHz turbo mean for actual workload performance?

The two Xeon Gold 5118 processors run at 2.3GHz base and can boost to 3.2GHz, providing 24 cores total for multi-threaded applications and virtualization density.

How does the HBA330 12Gb/s SAS/SATA controller limit the 1.92TB SSD array in practice?

The PERC HBA330 connects the eight 1.92TB SATA 6Gb/s SSDs at 12Gb/s SAS speed, so the SATA 6Gb/s drive interface sets the practical throughput ceiling.
