Compact 1U rack server for dense compute

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R440 is a 1U rackmount server built for data centres and business workloads that demand high density. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processors, each running at 2.2 GHz with 10 cores and a 3.0 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory across four 16 GB modules. A PERC H330 controller manages eight 600 GB 10 K SAS drives in 2.5 inch bays.

Suits virtualisation and database clusters

This configuration fits organisations running virtualisation, application hosting or database workloads where rack space is at a premium. The dual 550 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy for continuous operation. Buyers who need more drive bays or GPU acceleration should evaluate other platforms. The fixed 64 GB memory capacity and eight-bay chassis limit expansion for memory-heavy or storage-dense deployments.

Eight 600 GB SAS drives on H330 controller

The storage subsystem centres on a Dell PERC H330 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller connected to eight enterprise 600 GB 10 K SAS hard drives. This delivers consistent rotational performance for mixed read-write workloads. The controller and drive count define the usable capacity and RAID options available without adding external enclosures.

Questions about this item

How much heat and power should I expect from the two 550W platinum PSUs running all day?

Each supply is rated at 550 watts with platinum efficiency, so total input power will stay close to the load the two Xeon Silver 4114 CPUs and eight 10K SAS drives actually draw.

What cabling and backplane must already be in my rack for the eight 2.5-inch SAS bays to work?

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays wired to the PERC H330 controller; you only need standard SAS data and power cables that plug into the backplane already installed.

Will the H330 controller recognise my older 6 Gb/s SATA SSDs if I mix them with the 600GB 10K SAS drives?

Yes, the PERC H330 supports both 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA devices, so legacy SATA SSDs will operate alongside the supplied SAS drives.
