Purpose-built 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R530 is a 2U rack server equipped with dual Intel Xeon E5-2603 v3 six-core processors running at 1.6 GHz and 48 GB of DDR4 memory across twelve DIMM slots. It ships with two 2 TB 7.2K SAS drives managed by a PERC H730 RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 750 W redundant hot-swap power supplies and iDRAC8 remote management complete a platform aimed at small-to-midsize virtualization, database or file-serving workloads.

Storage interface and expansion ceiling

Eight 3.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives, yet the installed H730 controller and backplane limit aggregate throughput to 12 Gbps SAS and 6 Gbps SATA lanes. The specifications list a maximum raw capacity of 80 TB, so configurations beyond that point require external enclosures. Only five PCIe slots — three at 3.0 and two at 2.0 — are available for additional HBAs, NICs or accelerators, capping I/O expansion well below larger 4U chassis.

Build practicality and daily operation

Redundant power supplies and hot-plug drive carriers allow drive or PSU replacement without downtime, while the included rail kit secures the 62 lb chassis in standard racks. The front bezel and DVD-ROM drive occupy minimal depth, leaving the 25.4-inch length compatible with most cabinets. Four onboard 1 GbE ports handle baseline networking; the Matrox G200eR2 video output is limited to basic console access. No operating system is included, so deployment begins with hypervisor or OS installation via iDRAC8 virtual media.
