A 1U rack server with dual 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs, 64 GB DDR4, eight 600 GB SAS drives on an H730P controller, 10 GbE SFP+ networking and iDRAC9 Enterprise management
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for scale-out data centre workloads. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors deliver 40 cores at 2.4 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory populate four of twenty-four slots. Eight 600 GB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730P controller provide high-speed local storage.
The H730P 2 GB cache controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes with battery-backed write caching. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for flexible connectivity. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full out-of-band management, remote console and lifecycle automation without an operating system.
Dual 750 W platinum hot-swap power supplies maintain uptime during a unit failure or maintenance. Ready Rails allow tool-less mounting in standard four-post racks, and the included front bezel secures the drive bays. The 1U height maximises rack density while the LGA 3647 sockets and twenty-four DIMM slots leave room for future CPU and memory expansion.

Other versions of this model
The PERC H730P includes a 2GB cache with battery backup; the battery typically lasts several years and should be replaced when iDRAC9 reports a degraded state.
Each Xeon Gold 6148 has 20 cores at 2.4 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo; under continuous load the 750 W platinum power supplies and 1U thermal envelope cap total power draw before CPU frequency scales back.
Redundant 750 W platinum supplies and high-speed 1U fans keep the chassis within spec; expect noticeable fan noise and warm exhaust air when both CPUs and eight 10K SAS drives operate continuously.
