A 1U dual-socket rack server with two 12-core Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs, 64GB DDR4, eight 800GB SATA SSDs on a H730P controller, quad-port 1GbE/10Gb SFP+ networking and iDRAC9 Enterprise
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack-mounted server system designed for dense scale-out data centre computing. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules and a Dell PERC H730P storage controller with 2 GB cache. Eight 800 GB SATA SSDs fill the front 2.5-inch drive bays.
This configuration suits organisations running virtualisation clusters, database applications or high-performance computing tasks that benefit from dual-socket performance in a 1U footprint. The quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections for flexible fabric integration. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full remote management. Buyers who need more than 24 memory slots, more than eight 2.5-inch drive bays or more than two processor sockets should look at larger platforms.
The motherboard provides 24 DDR4 DIMM slots with a maximum supported capacity of 3 TB. The installed 64 GB uses only four slots, leaving 20 slots available for expansion. Memory must be DDR4 registered ECC; other DDR generations are physically and electrically incompatible. The LGA 3647 socket and Intel C620 chipset limit processor upgrades to the Scalable family supported by this platform.

Other versions of this model
Yes, the two 10 GbE ports are SFP+ cages so you must supply compatible SFP+ modules or direct-attach cables.
The controller supports SATA 6 Gb/s drives, so 2.5" SATA SSDs can be mixed with the installed 800 GB units in the same array.
Open the iDRAC web interface, go to Overview > Licence and verify the status shows Enterprise with no expiry warning.
