2U rack server with dual 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs, 256GB DDR4, H730P RAID controller and 24 hot-swap 2.5-inch drive bays
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores each. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 slots and a PERC H730P 2 GB storage controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Twenty-four 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drive trays provide high internal storage density, while an Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. Dual 1100 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise complete the package.
This platform targets software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider environments that need maximum drive count in a 2U form factor. The 24 hot-swap bays and hardware RAID controller fit workloads such as Ceph, VSAN or large backup repositories. Buyers who require PCIe add-in cards beyond the available slots, or who need a tower or pedestal chassis, should look at a different form factor.
The defining specification is the 24 front-accessible 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays, which set the raw storage ceiling for the system. No drives are included, so the buyer must populate the bays with compatible SAS or SATA SSDs or HDDs to reach the desired capacity and performance level.

Other versions of this model
The server uses redundant 1100 Watt platinum-efficiency power supplies; actual draw will depend on workload but the PSUs are rated for 1100 W each.
The chassis includes 24 hot-swap trays for 2.5-inch SATA or SAS drives; you must provide the drives and any SAS cables required by the PERC H730P controller.
The daughter card provides two 1 GbE ports and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so it can link to both legacy 1 GbE gear and 10 GbE SFP+ infrastructure.
