Dual 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. The system targets dense scale-out workloads such as virtualization clusters, database nodes and high-performance computing farms.

Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies

Dual hot-swap 750 W platinum-efficiency power supplies deliver redundant power for continuous operation. The 1U chassis uses integrated cooling tuned for the dual-processor thermal envelope, keeping acoustics within data-centre norms while sustaining full CPU turbo under load. Power draw scales with the 40 combined cores and the eight solid-state drives installed in the front bays.

8-bay 2.5" front storage with H730P RAID

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 400 GB SATA SSDs managed by a PERC H730P 2 GB controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. A quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote firmware updates, power cycling and console access. Ready Rails and a front bezel are included for immediate rack mounting.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 8 x 400GB SATA SSDs into the front 2.5-inch bays and which step is commonly missed?

Slide each drive into a bay until the latch clicks, then configure the virtual disks in the PERC H730P BIOS before the operating system loads; the step often missed is creating the RAID array in the controller firmware first.

What maintenance or replacement will the PERC H730P 2GB controller battery need later?

The controller includes a battery-backed write cache; the battery typically requires replacement after several years of continuous operation to preserve cache data during power loss.

What thermal or power limit appears first when both Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs run at 3.7GHz turbo under sustained load?

The dual 750 watt platinum power supplies set the ceiling; sustained all-core turbo on both 20-core processors can draw enough power to trigger throttling before the cooling capacity is exceeded.
