Dual Xeon 1U Server for Dense Scale-Out Computing

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data center workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. Eight 400 GB SATA SSDs and a PERC H730P RAID controller provide high-speed storage in a compact form factor.

Suits Virtualization and Database Clusters.

This configuration suits virtualization hosts, database clusters and high-performance computing tasks that demand many CPU threads and fast storage IOPS. The quad-port network daughter card with dual 10 Gb SFP+ and dual 1 GbE links supports heavy east-west traffic. Buyers who need GPU acceleration or single-threaded frequency above 3.2 GHz turbo should look at alternative platforms.

24 DIMM Slots Define Maximum Memory Growth

The Intel C620 chipset and dual LGA 3647 sockets expose 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, allowing expansion from the installed 256 GB up to the platform maximum of 3 TB. This slot count is the decisive factor for planning memory-intensive deployments such as in-memory databases or large virtual machine densities.
