Dense 1U dual-socket server

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for scale-out data centre workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 16 cores, providing 32 cores total. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across eight modules. Eight 800 GB SATA SSDs and a PERC H730P RAID controller complete the storage subsystem.

Suits virtualisation and database clusters

This configuration fits organisations running virtualised environments, database clusters or high-performance computing tasks that benefit from dual-socket density and redundant power. The quad-port network daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections for flexible fabric attachment. Buyers who need more than 24 DIMM slots, additional drive bays beyond the eight 2.5-inch bays, or a different processor generation should evaluate alternative platforms.

24 DDR4 slots define maximum memory

The R640 provides 24 DDR4 memory slots with a maximum supported capacity of 3 TB. The installed 256 GB uses eight 32 GB modules, leaving 16 slots available for expansion. This slot count and the DDR4 requirement are the decisive factors when planning memory upgrades or validating compatibility with existing modules.

Questions about this item

How does the 2.1 GHz base clock with 3.7 GHz turbo affect real-world throughput on the dual 16-core Xeon Gold 6130 CPUs?

The two 16-core Xeon Gold 6130 processors run at 2.1 GHz base and can boost to 3.7 GHz, giving 32 physical cores that scale multi-threaded workloads while single-thread bursts use the higher turbo frequency.

What does the PERC H730P 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller cap in practice for the eight 800 GB SATA SSDs?

The H730P provides 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA connectivity with 2 GB cache, so the eight 800 GB SATA SSDs are limited to the SATA 6 Gb/s link speed and the controller’s RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 modes.

What physical space and mounting hardware does the 1U R640 need to install in a rack?

The server occupies 1U of rack height and ships with ready rails and a front bezel for direct mounting in a standard equipment rack.
