1U rack server with dual 20-core Xeon Gold 6148 processors, 768 GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller, eight 2.5" drive bays, quad-port 1/10 GbE networking.
The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for scale-out data centre workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with 20 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 768 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 DIMM slots. It is designed for organisations that need high core counts in a compact form factor.
Two hot-swap 750 W platinum-efficiency power supplies provide full redundancy for continuous operation. The 1U chassis uses Dell’s engineered airflow path to cool both CPUs, the PERC H730P controller and the X520/I350 network daughter card under sustained load. Fan speeds are managed by iDRAC 9 Enterprise to balance acoustic output with thermal headroom in dense rack rows.
Eight 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drive trays are pre-installed without drives, allowing flexible capacity planning. The PERC H730P 2 GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. A quad-port network daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full out-of-band management, while ReadyRails and a front bezel are included for immediate rack mounting.

Other versions of this model
Slide each drive into a tray until the latch clicks, then insert the tray until it locks; the step often missed is seating the tray fully so the backplane connector engages.
The two 750 W platinum power supplies and the system fans are hot-swap parts designed for replacement without downtime.
The 750 W redundant power supplies set the ceiling; sustained all-core turbo on both 20-core processors can exceed their combined output before thermal throttling activates.
