The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data centre computing. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors provide sixteen cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.0 GHz turbo frequency. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory are installed across four slots. The system targets workloads that need high core density in a single rack unit.

Storage And Network Foundations

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays connect to a PERC H730P 2 GB controller that supports SAS and SATA drives with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. Two 300 GB 10K SAS drives are fitted. A quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables remote management. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and ready rails complete the build.

Sustained Density Performance

The 1U chassis uses redundant hot-swap power supplies to maintain uptime under continuous load. DDR4 registered ECC memory protects data integrity during long-running tasks. The H730P controller’s battery-backed cache preserves write performance during extended I/O streams. This configuration suits environments that prioritise compute density and remote manageability over large local storage capacity or GPU acceleration.
