Purpose-built virtualization platform

The Dell PowerEdge R640 8B rack server delivers 36 cores and 72 threads across two Xeon Gold 6150 processors running at 2.70GHz. With 512GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory installed and capacity for up to 3TB, it supports dense virtual-machine deployments and memory-intensive business applications. Eight 1.2TB 10K SAS drives provide high-speed storage for operating systems, databases and backups. The PERC H740P controller manages RAID without a separate card.

Thermals, noise and power draw

Dual redundant power supplies share the load in normal operation, keeping each unit in its efficient range. The 1U chassis directs front-to-rear airflow across the processors, memory and drive bays, so fan speeds stay moderate during typical virtualization workloads. Acoustic output remains within data-centre norms for a 1U server, and power draw scales with the actual compute demand rather than idling at peak.

Sustained-load behaviour

Under continuous heavy compute the fans ramp to maintain safe component temperatures, raising noise above idle levels but staying within spec for rack environments. The H740P controller sustains write throughput across all eight SAS drives without throttling, while the dual 10GbE X540 ports handle persistent network streams. Memory ECC correction runs continuously, protecting data integrity during long-running analytics or ERP jobs.

Questions about this item

How do I install the Dell PERC H740P RAID controller in the R640 and which step is often missed?

The H740P installs in the dedicated internal RAID slot; the step often missed is connecting the SAS cables from the backplane to the controller before closing the chassis.

What maintenance will the 8× 1.2TB 10K SAS drives need over time?

Plan to replace any drive that reports predictive-failure alerts; the hot-swap bays let you swap a 1.2TB SAS drive without powering down the R640.

What thermal limit appears first when the dual Xeon Gold 6150 CPUs run sustained workloads?

The 2.70GHz base frequency is the first ceiling; under continuous load the processors will throttle to stay within their thermal envelope.
