Ideal for virtualisation and database workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 2U rackmount server system built for business workloads such as virtualisation, databases, backups and application hosting. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver 48 cores at 2.1GHz for dependable multi-threaded performance. 128GB of DDR4 memory supports multiple services and data-heavy applications.

Verify rack space and memory expansion headroom

This unit occupies a standard rackmount form factor and weighs 60 units. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 1TB SATA SSDs and managed by an H730P controller. The platform supports up to 3TB of DDR4 memory across two processor sockets, both of which are already filled.

Dual-processor thermals managed by integrated

Front-to-rear airflow cools the 48-core configuration under typical virtualisation and database loads. Integrated GPU output handles basic management display without adding discrete-card heat. Power draw scales with CPU utilisation and the eight SSDs, while system LEDs indicate power, Ethernet and USB status.

Questions about this item

Does the server ship with rails, cables and a power supply or must I buy them separately?

The listing notes that the unit ships with all relevant accessories; typical accessories for a rack server include sliding rails, a power cord and a redundant power supply.

Should I select the 128 GB DDR4 configuration or add more memory later?

The system arrives with 128 GB DDR4 installed and supports up to 3 TB total, so the base configuration is sufficient for many virtualization workloads and additional modules can be added if demand grows.

What does the 48-core figure mean for real-world virtualization performance?

Two Xeon Platinum 8160 processors deliver 48 cores at 2.1 GHz, providing strong multi-threaded throughput for running multiple virtual machines, databases and application containers simultaneously.
