DELL PowerEdge R640 dual Xeon server

This 1U rack server ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6146 processors running at 3.20 GHz, each offering 12 cores for a total of 24 cores. The system includes 128GB of DDR4 memory and ten 1.92TB SATA SSDs managed by an H740P RAID controller. It is built for business workloads such as virtualization, databases, file storage, backups and application hosting.

10-bay 2.5-inch front storage with H740P controller

The chassis provides ten hot-swap 2.5-inch drive bays at the front, all populated with 1.92TB SATA SSDs. The H740P RAID controller handles array management and data protection for the full drive set. A front bezel is included for a complete rack-ready appearance and physical drive protection.

Check LGA 3647 socket and DDR4 memory compatibility

This server uses the LGA 3647 socket and DDR4 memory; verify that any planned processor upgrades or memory additions match these specifications. Confirm your rack provides standard 1U mounting space and adequate airflow for a dual-processor configuration. Ensure your operating system and hypervisor support the installed hardware before deployment.

Questions about this item

Does the H740P controller cap the SATA SSDs to a specific link speed?

The H740P supports SATA 6 Gb/s so each 1.92 TB SSD can run at its native interface rate.

What chassis depth and rail kit does the 10-bay 2.5-inch R640 require?

The 1U rack chassis accepts 2.5-inch drives in ten front bays and mounts on standard Dell ready-rails for a four-post cabinet.

How are the two Xeon Gold 6146 processors and 128 GB DDR4 installed, and what step is often missed?

Both CPUs drop into the LGA 3647 sockets and the 128 GB of DDR4 fills the matched DIMM slots per CPU; the step often missed is applying the correct torque to the heatsink retention screws before powering on.
