Dual Xeon 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 eight-core processors running at 2.4 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots and a PERC H330 12 Gbps RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch hot-plug drive bays for SAS or SATA drives. It targets IT teams deploying virtualisation hosts, database nodes or general-purpose compute in standard racks.

Redundant 750 W power and iDRAC8 management

Two hot-swap 750 W power supplies deliver N+1 redundancy for continuous operation. The Matrox G200 graphics subsystem consumes minimal power while providing basic video output. Remote administration is handled by iDRAC8 with Lifecycle Controller, offering out-of-band monitoring, firmware updates and virtual console access without loading the host operating system. A DVD-ROM drive is included for legacy media installation.

No drives or trays included

The configuration arrives without storage drives or drive trays, so buyers must source compatible 2.5-inch SAS or SATA media and caddies separately. An operating system is also absent, requiring a separate licence and installation media. The system includes a power cable, while rail kit, bezel, keyboard and mouse are not supplied. Seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot remain available for additional networking or acceleration cards.

Questions about this item

How do I install the CPUs and what step is commonly missed?

The server uses dual Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 processors in the Intel C610 chipset; the step often missed is applying the correct torque sequence on the heatsink retention screws to ensure even contact.

Which components will need replacement first under continuous operation?

The 2x 750W redundant hot-swap power supplies and the cooling fans are the primary field-replaceable units that wear out first under sustained load.

What limit appears first when the system runs at full load for extended periods?

Thermal throttling of the 2.4GHz 8-core CPUs occurs once the 2U chassis airflow cannot dissipate the combined processor heat fast enough.
