Dual Xeon 14-core server for virtualisation

The PowerEdge R730 fits into a 2U rack slot and runs two Xeon E5-2683 v3 processors at 2.0 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. Fourteen cores per chip give 28 threads for heavy multi-threaded workloads such as virtual desktop infrastructure, data warehousing or high-performance computing nodes. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4 2133 MHz registered ECC memory across all 24 slots.

Redundant 750 W platinum supplies

Dual 750 watt platinum power supplies share the load and keep the system running if one unit fails. Eight 2.5-inch SATA bays hold the installed 400 GB enterprise SSDs, and the backplane connects to the PERC H730 controller with its 1 GB cache and battery backup. The rack rails and front bezel are included for immediate mounting.

H730 RAID controller and iDRAC8 Enterprise remote

The PERC H730 supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode, so you can tune redundancy or capacity without extra hardware. iDRAC 8 Enterprise provides full out-of-band console access, power control and firmware updates over a dedicated network port. A quad-port daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for storage or cluster traffic.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 24 DDR4 memory modules into the 24 DIMM slots and which step is commonly missed?

Populate all 24 slots with the 32 GB registered ECC DDR4 modules at 2133 MHz, ensuring each module clicks fully into its LGA 2011-3 channel; the step often missed is verifying the memory configuration in the iDRAC8 Enterprise BIOS before closing the chassis.

Which component will need replacement first under continuous write workloads on the 8x 400GB SATA SSDs?

The 400 GB SATA SSDs have a finite write endurance; under sustained heavy writes the NAND cells will wear out before the PERC H730 controller battery or the 750 W power supplies require service.

What thermal or power limit appears first when both 14-core Xeon E5-2683 v3 CPUs run at 3.0 GHz turbo across all cores?

The 750 W platinum power supplies set the ceiling; dual-CPU turbo at 3.0 GHz can draw more than the 750 W budget, triggering throttling before the iDRAC8 or PERC H730 battery becomes a factor.
