2U rack server with dual Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors, 128GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730 RAID controller and twelve 8TB SATA drives for high-capacity storage workloads
The PowerEdge R730xd is a 2U rack server built for midsize and large enterprises running data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, virtual desktop infrastructure, databases and high-performance computing as a data node. It ships with dual Xeon E5-2640 v3 processors, 128GB of DDR4 ECC memory and twelve 8TB enterprise hard drives. Organisations needing consolidated storage and compute in a single chassis will find this configuration aligned with those requirements.
Dual 750 watt platinum-efficiency hot-swap power supplies deliver redundant power while maintaining high conversion efficiency under typical loads. The 2U rack form factor relies on forced-air cooling tuned for data-centre environments, so acoustic output is characteristic of server-room deployments rather than office settings. Power consumption scales with CPU utilisation and drive activity across the twelve 7.2K rpm SATA spindles and dual eight-core processors.
The PERC H730 1GB controller provides hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode with battery-backed cache for data protection. A quad-port network daughter card adds two 1GbE and two 10Gb SFP+ connections for flexible fabric integration. iDRAC 8 Enterprise enables comprehensive remote management including virtual console, power control and hardware monitoring. Ready rails and a front bezel are included for immediate rack installation.

Other versions of this model
Slide each drive into the hot-swap bay until the lever clicks; the step often missed is seating the lever fully so the drive locks and the controller detects it.
The H730 includes a 1 GB battery-backed cache; plan to replace that battery module when iDRAC reports a degraded cache state.
The 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA backplane bandwidth shared across 12 bays becomes the bottleneck before CPU or memory limits are reached.
