Capacity and compute density

The PowerEdge R730xd packs two Xeon E5-2660 v3 processors, each running at 2.6 GHz with 10 cores, into a 2U rack chassis. Sixteen 32 GB DDR4 modules deliver 512 GB of registered ECC memory across 24 slots, leaving room to grow toward the 1.5 TB ceiling. Twelve 3.5-inch drive bays hold 4 TB enterprise SATA disks at 7.2 K RPM, giving raw capacity for dense storage workloads. The PERC H730 controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode.

Thermals and power in normal use

Dual 750 W platinum-efficiency supplies share the load and provide hot-swap redundancy for continuous operation. The 2U form factor allows front-to-rear airflow across the processors, memory and drive cage without exotic cooling. Under typical mixed read-write and virtualization loads the fans ramp steadily rather than spike, keeping acoustic output within data-centre norms. Power draw scales with CPU utilisation and disk activity, staying within the redundant supply budget.

Bundled accessories and software impact

ReadyRails snap into standard square-hole or threaded racks, cutting installation time to minutes. The front bezel adds physical security and a clean appearance in shared cabinets. iDRAC 8 Enterprise enables remote power control, virtual console and hardware inventory without an OS, reducing on-site visits. The quad-port daughter card supplies two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for flexible network topology. These items arrive fitted, so the server is rack-ready on delivery.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 16 memory modules into the 24 DDR4 slots without leaving gaps?

Populate all 16 modules in matched pairs across the 24 slots following the channel sequence shown on the air-shroud label; the step most people miss is skipping a channel and creating an unbalanced rank layout.

When will the 12 SATA drives or the PERC H730 battery need replacement?

The 7.2K SATA drives typically reach their rated workload limit after several years of continuous operation; the controller battery should be swapped when iDRAC 8 reports a degraded charge state.

What thermal or power ceiling appears first when both Xeon E5-2660 v3 CPUs run at 3.3GHz turbo continuously?

The dual 750W platinum supplies set the hard envelope; once combined processor and memory draw reaches that ceiling the system throttles before any temperature trip point.
