Dual 18-core Xeon server for dense storage workloads

The PowerEdge R730xd fits 24 drive bays and two 18-core Xeon E5-2699 v3 processors at 2.3 GHz into a 2U rack chassis. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 ECC memory and a PERC H730 controller managing 24 enterprise 300 GB 10 K SAS drives. The platform targets databases, virtual desktop infrastructure and high-performance computing data nodes.

Verify rack depth and power infrastructure before

The 2U form factor requires a standard four-post rack with sufficient depth for the chassis and included sliding rails. Two hot-swap 750 W platinum power supplies need matching PDU outlets and circuit capacity. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so compatible transceivers and switch ports must be available.

Enterprise build with hot-swap components

All 24 drive bays, both power supplies and the cooling fans are hot-swappable for non-disruptive maintenance. The iDRAC 8 Enterprise module provides dedicated out-of-band management over a separate network connection. A front bezel is included, and the chassis uses tool-less rails for quicker installation and service access.

Questions about this item

What comes in the box with the R730xd and what must I purchase separately?

The unit ships with two Xeon E5-2699 v3 processors, 128GB DDR4 ECC memory, 24× 300GB 10K SAS drives, PERC H730 controller, X520/I350 quad-port network card, iDRAC8 Enterprise, dual 750W platinum power supplies, rails and bezel. No operating system or software licences are included.

Which memory capacity should I choose if the board has 24 slots and supports 1.5TB?

The server is populated with 8× 16GB modules for 128GB total, leaving 16 empty slots. Add matching DDR4 2133MHz registered ECC DIMMs to grow toward the 1.5TB maximum.

What does the 3.6GHz turbo figure mean when the base clock is 2.3GHz?

Each 18-core Xeon can raise its frequency to 3.6GHz on active cores under thermal headroom, giving short-burst performance above the 2.3GHz base for latency-sensitive workloads.
