Dual-socket 14-core server for dense 2.5" storage

The PowerEdge R730xd is a 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon E5-2660 v4 processors running at 2.0 GHz with 14 cores each. It ships with 256 GB of DDR4 ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules and a PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Twenty-four hot-swap 2.5" trays accept SATA or SAS drives, while a quad-port daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links. iDRAC8 Enterprise and dual 750 W platinum power supplies complete the chassis.

Suits workloads needing many drive bays

This platform fits virtualisation clusters, database nodes and HPC data tiers that benefit from high core counts and front-accessible 2.5" bays. Buyers who need more than two sockets or memory beyond 1.5 TB should evaluate larger chassis. Environments requiring drive interfaces other than SATA or SAS will not be supported by the installed backplane.

24-bay 2.5" SATA/SAS backplane with H730 RAID

The single specification that decides fit is the 24-bay 2.5" SATA/SAS backplane paired with the PERC H730 controller. If the deployment demands that exact bay count and drive interface, this server matches; otherwise a different chassis is required.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 24 2.5" drive trays into the R730xd and what step is often missed?

Slide each tray into a front bay until the latch clicks; the step often missed is seating the tray fully so the backplane connector engages, otherwise the drive will not appear to the PERC H730 controller

What maintenance will the PERC H730 1GB controller battery need later?

The H730 1GB controller uses a battery-backed cache; the battery typically requires replacement after several years to preserve write-cache protection during power loss

What limit appears first when both Xeon E5-2660 v4 CPUs run at 3.2 GHz turbo under sustained load?

Thermal limits on the 2U chassis appear first; the dual 750 W platinum supplies deliver ample power, but cooling capacity caps sustained turbo operation
