2U rack server for dense storage

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch drive bays into a 2U chassis, giving storage-heavy workloads room to grow without consuming extra rack height. A single Xeon E5-2650 v3 with ten cores at 2.3 GHz and 96 GB of DDR4 handles virtualisation, database or backup tasks. Dual 750 W redundant supplies keep the platform running through a power-module failure. This configuration suits IT teams that need high drive density and hardware RAID in a compact form factor.

H730 RAID controller with three 15K SAS drives

The Perc H730 card brings 1 GB cache and 12 Gbps SAS connectivity, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 so administrators can match redundancy to each workload. Three factory-installed 300 GB 15 000 rpm drives deliver low-latency access for operating-system volumes or transaction logs. The remaining twenty-one bays accept additional SAS or SATA drives, letting capacity scale to the controller’s 52 TB limit. An internal DVD-ROM is also fitted for media-based installs.

Single processor caps memory at 96 GB

Although the motherboard provides twenty-four DIMM slots and supports up to 1 536 GB with two CPUs, this unit ships with only one E5-2650 v3, so the installed 96 GB represents the current ceiling. Buyers who need more than 96 GB must procure a second compatible processor before adding further modules. The four onboard 1 GbE ports and up to six PCIe 3.0 slots remain available regardless of CPU count.

Questions about this item

When will the 300 GB 15K SAS drives or the H730 controller need replacement?

The three 300 GB 15K 6 Gbps SAS drives and the H730 1 GB 12 Gbps RAID controller are installed new; plan drive replacement after typical enterprise duty cycles and controller replacement if firmware updates cease.

Which limit appears first during sustained workloads — the 96 GB memory ceiling or the 24-bay storage ceiling?

The 96 GB installed DDR4 across 24 DIMM slots is the hard ceiling; the 24 x 2.5" hot-plug bays support up to 52 TB so storage headroom remains long after memory is full.

How loud and hot does the 2U chassis get with dual 750 W redundant supplies running 24/7?

Dual 750 W redundant supplies share load efficiently; the 2U rack chassis uses managed fan curves via iDRAC8 so acoustic and thermal output stay within data-centre norms for continuous operation.
