2U rack server with dual 24-core Xeon Platinum 8160 processors at 2.1 GHz, 128 GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller, and two 400 GB SATA SSDs
The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 24 cores. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy.
This server fits organisations that run virtualised environments, large databases or high-performance computing tasks where twin 24-core CPUs and 128 GB of memory are required. Buyers who need more than 3 TB of RAM, additional drive bays beyond the eight 2.5-inch slots, or GPU accelerator support should evaluate other platforms. The fixed two-socket design also limits future CPU expansion.
The integrated Dell PERC H730P storage controller offers 2 GB of battery-backed cache and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. It manages the two installed 400 GB SATA SSDs and any additional SATA or SAS drives placed in the eight-bay chassis. This controller choice determines which drive types and RAID configurations are available.

Other versions of this model
The server has eight 2.5-inch bays and the PERC H730P supports SATA and SAS drives, so your existing 2.5-inch SATA SSDs will fit and be recognised by the controller.
During POST the BIOS will list both 24-core CPUs at 2.1GHz and show 128GB of registered ECC DDR4; iDRAC 9 Enterprise also reports the full inventory in its System Overview page.
The X520/I350 daughter card provides two 10Gb SFP+ ports, but SFP+ transceivers and cables are not included and must be purchased separately.
