Purpose-built 2U rack server

The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2-socket rack server built for compute-heavy workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors running at 2.3 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. Each CPU provides 12 cores, giving 24 cores total across the system.

Upgrade from single-socket or older 2U platforms

This configuration replaces single-socket servers or earlier 2U systems that cannot scale beyond one processor. The jump is worth it when workloads need the full 24 cores and 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory. The H730P controller adds RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with a 2 GB battery-backed cache.

Fits standard 2U racks with dual 750 W supplies

The chassis occupies 2U of rack space and includes ready rails and a front bezel for quick mounting. Redundant hot-swap 750 W platinum power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails. Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 400 GB SATA SSDs connected through the 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller. A quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links. iDRAC 9 Enterprise gives full remote management without needing a local console.

Questions about this item

What rack size and rails are included for mounting the 2U PowerEdge R740?

The server is a 2U rack unit and the listing includes ready rails for installation.

How are the Xeon Gold 5118 processors installed, and what step is often missed?

Both processors come already installed in the LGA 3647 sockets; the step people miss is verifying that all 24 DDR4 slots are populated correctly for the 256GB configuration.

Which components will need replacement first in the 8x 400GB SSD array?

The eight 400GB SATA SSDs are the primary wear items; the PERC H730P controller battery will also need replacement after several years of operation.
