2U rack server with dual 24-core Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs, 768GB DDR4, PERC H730P controller and eight 600GB SAS drives
The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2-socket 2U rack server built around two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores at 2.1 GHz and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 slots, leaving room to grow toward the 3 TB maximum. The system targets environments that need compute density and storage flexibility in a compact rack footprint.
Two Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs occupy the maximum processor count supported by the Intel C620 chipset. The Dell PERC H730P 2 GB controller manages eight 600 GB 10K SAS drives in the 2.5-inch bays, offering RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. A quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections, while iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides dedicated remote management. Redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and sliding rails are included.
Under continuous load the dual 24-core processors maintain high clock speeds within the 2U thermal envelope, supported by the redundant 750 W platinum power supplies. The H730P battery-backed cache preserves write performance during extended I/O bursts, and the 12 Gb/s SAS backplane keeps storage bandwidth consistent. Hot-swap power and drive bays allow component replacement without taking the server offline, supporting uninterrupted operation in demanding deployments.
