Dell PowerEdge R740 2U Server

This Dell PowerEdge R740 2U rack server ships new with dual Xeon Gold 6148 processors, each offering 20 cores at 2.40 GHz with turbo up to 3.70 GHz. It includes 256GB of DDR4 memory across eight 32GB modules and 30.72TB of enterprise SSD storage on four 7.68TB drives. A PERC H730 RAID controller and iDRAC9 remote management are fitted.

Suited for virtualisation.

The twin 20-core CPUs and large memory pool handle heavy virtualisation, private cloud and high-performance computing tasks. Buyers who need GPU acceleration or fibre-channel connectivity will not find those interfaces here. The quad-port 1GbE controller limits network throughput to gigabit speeds.

Rail kit included, drives and memory need fitting

A rail kit is supplied for rack mounting. The supplier notes that hard drives and memory upgrades are included separately and not installed, so installation of the four 2.5-inch SSDs and eight DIMMs is required before use. Hot-swappable redundant power supplies allow replacement without downtime.

Questions about this item

Does the PERC H730 RAID controller need a separate PCIe slot on my motherboard?

The PERC H730 is integrated into the R740 chassis and does not occupy an additional PCIe slot.

Can I keep my existing 1 GbE network switches when I connect the Broadcom BCM5720 quad-port adapter?

Yes, the BCM5720 provides four 1 GbE BASE-T ports that are fully compatible with standard Gigabit switches.

How do I confirm the iDRAC9 Express remote management is active after the server boots?

Open a browser to the iDRAC IP address shown on the front-panel LCD or DHCP lease list; the login page confirms the controller is running.
