A 2U rack server with dual 12-core Xeon Gold 5118 processors, 768GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller, 24 hot-swap 2.5-inch drive trays.
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack-mount server system built for storage-heavy workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores. A total of 768 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory is installed across 24 slots. The platform targets software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider deployments.
The unit includes ready rails and a front bezel for rack mounting. Twenty-four 2.5-inch SAS/SATA drive trays are populated, but no drives are installed. The PERC H730P 2 GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through modes. Common issues involve forgetting to populate all 24 memory slots for balanced channel performance or ordering the wrong drive height for the trays.
Confirm the rack can accommodate the chassis depth and that two 1100 W redundant platinum power supplies match the available PDU outlets. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so check switch compatibility and cabling. Ensure the operating system supports the Intel C620 chipset and the installed Xeon processors.

Other versions of this model
During POST the controller BIOS will display its firmware version and list every attached drive; a healthy battery-backed cache will show "Write-Back" mode enabled and zero cache errors in the iDRAC9 Enterprise hardware log.
The server ships with 24 empty 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays and the H730P controller; you must provide all 2.5-inch SAS or SATA hard drives or SSDs and any additional mounting hardware for those drives.
This unit is the 24-bay 2.5-inch model and supports up to 24 drives; no other bay-count option exists for this specific chassis.
