2U dual-socket server with 24 drive bays

This Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rackmount server system built for storage-dense workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 16 cores. The system includes 768 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 24 slots. Twenty-four 300 GB 10K SAS 2.5-inch drives are pre-installed behind a Dell PERC H730P 2 GB controller.

Verify rack depth and power infrastructure

Confirm your rack can accommodate a 2U chassis with the included ready rails and front bezel. The server requires redundant 1100 W platinum power supplies, so ensure your PDU and circuit capacity match. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports; check that your switch supports the required SFP+ transceivers. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides remote management over a dedicated interface.

Hot-swap bays and redundant components simplify

All 24 drive bays support hot-swap SAS and SATA drives, allowing replacement without downtime. The dual power supplies are also hot-swappable for continuous operation. Tool-less ready rails enable rapid rack installation and service access. The front bezel protects drives while maintaining airflow. iDRAC 9 Enterprise offers hardware-level monitoring and remote console access independent of the operating system.

Questions about this item

Does the R740xd ship with 24 drive trays or caddies for the 2.5" bays?

The server includes 24 Dell Enterprise 300GB 10K SAS 12Gb/s 2.5" hard drives installed; the listing notes stock photos may differ, so tray inclusion is not guaranteed.

Should I choose the 768GB DDR4 2666MHz configuration or add more modules up to the 3TB maximum?

768GB is provided as 24x 32GB registered ECC DDR4 2666MHz filling all 24 slots; expanding requires replacing existing modules with higher-capacity DDR4 RDIMMs.

What throughput can I expect from the 24x 300GB 10K SAS drives behind the H730P controller?

The PERC H730P 2GB 12Gb/s SAS controller supports RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60; 24x 10K SAS drives deliver high IOPS for mixed workloads, limited by the 12Gb/s backend.
