Dense storage compute platform

The PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider workloads. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors provide 32 total cores at 2.6 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo, while 768 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory fills all 24 slots.

Integrated controller and networking bundle

The PERC H730P 2 GB controller enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through across 24 drive bays. A quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections, and iDRAC 9 Enterprise delivers full out-of-band remote management.

SAS interface and bay population limits

All 24 front bays are occupied by 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives, so no additional 2.5 inch devices can be added without removing existing disks. The 12 Gb/s SAS backbone caps individual drive throughput, and the two-processor maximum means CPU expansion stops at the installed pair.

Questions about this item

How often will the PERC H730P controller battery need replacing?

The H730P includes a 2GB cache battery that typically lasts several years under normal operation; Dell recommends checking battery status via iDRAC9 Enterprise during routine maintenance.

Which component reaches its limit first during sustained all-core workloads?

With two Xeon Gold 6142 CPUs at 2.6 GHz base and 3.7 GHz turbo, the 1100 W platinum power supplies set the thermal and power ceiling before the 768 GB DDR4 memory or 24-bay SAS backplane saturate.

What are the noise and heat levels when the server runs 24/7 with all 24 drives active?

Dual redundant 1100 W platinum PSUs and hot-swap fans keep the 2U chassis within Dell's thermal spec; iDRAC9 Enterprise reports real-time inlet temperature and fan RPM for continuous monitoring.
