A 2U rack server with dual 12-core Xeon Silver 4116 processors at 2.1 GHz, 256 GB DDR4 memory, a PERC H730P RAID controller and 24 hot-swap 2.5-inch drive bays for dense storage workloads
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for environments that need many drive bays in a compact chassis. It ships with two Intel Xeon Silver 4116 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 12 cores, and 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 slots. The system targets software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider workloads.
The defining specification is the front-loading 24-bay 2.5-inch tray layout that accepts SATA and SAS drives, backed by a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. No drives are included, so buyers must supply their own media. The platform maxes out at two processors and 3 TB of memory, limiting further CPU or RAM expansion.
Dual 1100 W platinum power supplies and redundant hot-swap cooling keep both 12-core CPUs at their 2.1 GHz base clock during extended storage or virtualisation tasks. The quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for steady data movement, while iDRAC 9 Enterprise allows remote monitoring without interrupting the host.

Other versions of this model
The system ships with 256GB across eight 32GB registered ECC modules running at 2400MHz, providing a large error-correcting memory pool for virtualisation or database workloads.
The PERC H730P 2GB controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 at 12Gb/s SAS/SATA speeds, with battery-backed cache for write protection.
The 2U chassis holds 24 front-access 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays; it requires a standard 2U rack space and includes Ready Rails and a front bezel for mounting.
