DELL PowerEdge R940 3U rack server 4× Xeon 8160 2.1 GHz 24-core 128 GB DDR4 8× 1.2 TB SAS

Four-socket Xeon server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge R940 packs four Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores at 2.1 GHz and a 3.7 GHz turbo, into a 3U rack chassis. It ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 48 slots and supports up to 6 TB total capacity. The platform targets organisations running virtualisation clusters, in-memory databases or high-throughput transaction workloads that demand maximum core count in minimal rack space.

Sustained load behaviour with redundant power

Dual 1600 W platinum-efficiency supplies deliver hot-swap redundancy so the system stays online during a unit failure or maintenance swap. The PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives in RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60, providing consistent throughput for mixed read-write patterns without thermal throttling. Quad-port networking — two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links — keeps storage and migration traffic flowing during extended operations.

Tool-less rails and remote management simplify

ReadyRails slide the 3U chassis into standard square-hole or threaded racks without tools, and the front bezel snaps on afterwards. iDRAC 9 Enterprise gives full out-of-band control — power cycling, BIOS updates, virtual console and hardware health — from any browser, eliminating the need for a crash cart. The only common snag is cable routing: the dense rear I/O panel leaves little room for stiff SAS or fibre leads, so plan cable lengths and latch orientation before racking.
