The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built around four Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors. Each CPU delivers 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 modules. It targets organisations running heavy virtualisation, in-memory databases or real-time analytics workloads.

Build integration and expansion

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays populated with two 300 GB 10K SAS drives and a PERC H730P 2 GB controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Network connectivity comes from an Intel X520/I350 daughter card offering two 1 GbE and two 10 GbE SFP+ ports.
