CPU Model Gold 5118
The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server built for organisations that need dense, four-socket compute in a compact form factor. It ships with four Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores and a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered ECC memory across 48 slots and two 800 GB SATA SSDs managed by a PERC H730P controller. Dual 1600 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Enterprise provide redundancy and remote management.
Moving from a two-socket server or a four-socket system with fewer cores per CPU yields a significant jump in parallel throughput for virtualisation, in-memory databases and high-performance computing. The step is worth it when your workloads saturate the CPU or memory bandwidth of a smaller chassis and you need the 6 TB maximum memory ceiling without moving to a larger rack footprint. The PERC H730P supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for flexible storage resilience.
Confirm your rack can accommodate a 3U chassis with the included ready rails and front bezel. Ensure the facility provides adequate power distribution for dual 1600 W supplies and that cooling capacity matches the thermal output. The Intel X520/I350 daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so check that your top-of-rack switches have compatible SFP+ transceivers and cabling. The system uses LGA 3647 sockets and DDR4 memory only.

Other versions of this model
The server is a 3U rack unit and ships with Ready Rails for mounting in a standard four-post rack.
All four CPU sockets are populated at the factory; the 256 GB arrives as eight 32 GB DDR4 modules pre-installed across the 48 slots, so the common oversight is forgetting to verify the memory population order if you add more modules later.
The two 1600 W power supplies and the eight 2.5" drive bays support hot-swap replacement; the PERC H730P controller battery and system fans are also field-replaceable.
