The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack-mount server system built for organisations that need high core counts in a compact form factor. It ships with four Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each running at 2.6 GHz with 16 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory installed across four modules. Redundant 1600 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC 9 Enterprise remote management are standard.
This platform suits virtualisation clusters, database nodes and analytics workloads that benefit from 64 physical cores and up to 6 TB of DDR4 capacity across 48 DIMM slots. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with a 2 GB cache. Buyers who need more than eight 2.5-inch drive bays or who require a higher density of local storage without external enclosures should evaluate other platforms.
The chassis provides eight hot-swap 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays and no drives are included. This bay count is the primary constraint for onboard storage capacity and RAID layout options. Network connectivity is delivered through a quad-port daughter card offering two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ interfaces. Expansion beyond the eight bays requires external JBODs or a different chassis.

Other versions of this model
The Dell PERC H730P 2GB controller handles 12Gb/s SAS and SATA drives and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 plus pass-through mode.
The unit ships with Dell Ready Rails and a front bezel for standard 4-post racks; allow enough depth for the 3U enclosure plus cable clearance at the rear.
All four LGA 3647 sockets are already populated with 16-core 2.6 GHz CPUs; the typical error is adding a fifth processor when the maximum is four.
