3U rack server with four 24-core Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs, 768GB DDR4, PERC H730P controller and dual 800GB SSDs
CPU Model Platinum 8160
The Dell PowerEdge R940 packs four Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores running at 2.1 GHz and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. It targets organisations that need dense, high-thread-count compute for databases, virtualisation or in-memory analytics in a 3U rack footprint.
Ready Rails and a front bezel are included for quick rack mounting. Redundant 1600 W platinum power supplies and hot-swap drive bays allow component replacement without downtime. The 48 DIMM slots are fully populated with 24 x 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC modules, so memory expansion requires removing existing sticks.
The installed 768 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory supports heavy virtualisation and in-memory databases, with headroom to 6 TB across 48 slots. Two 800 GB SATA SSDs on the PERC H730P controller provide fast boot and scratch space; the eight 2.5-inch bays can accept additional SAS or SATA drives for capacity growth. The quad-port X520/I350 network daughter card delivers two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for storage and cluster traffic.

Other versions of this model
Open the PERC H730P BIOS utility during POST, verify both 800 GB SATA SSDs appear as Ready, check that the desired RAID level shows Optimal, and confirm the battery-backed cache reports Healthy.
The unit includes four Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, 768 GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P controller with battery, two 800 GB SATA SSDs, X520/I350 quad-port network daughter card, iDRAC9 Enterprise, two 1600 W platinum PSUs, Ready Rails and front bezel; additional drives, memory modules or OS licences are not included.
This build already uses 24×32 GB modules filling half the 48 slots, leaving 24 free slots for future expansion up to 6 TB; selecting fewer larger modules now would reduce upgrade headroom.
