Mobile workstation for hybrid professionals

The DELL Precision 3470 is a 14.0 inch laptop built around a 12-core Intel Core i5-1250P processor that reaches 4.4 GHz on turbo. It ships with 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD running Windows 10 Pro. The 1920 x 1080 non-touch display includes an integrated webcam and 802.11ac wireless with Bluetooth for remote collaboration.

Step up from entry-level ultraportables

This unit replaces basic consumer notebooks that rely on dual-core chips and limited storage for office tasks. The jump is worth it when workloads demand sustained multi-thread throughput such as code compilation, light CAD or virtual machines. Buyers who need discrete graphics acceleration or more than 8GB of RAM for large datasets should look elsewhere.

Thermal behaviour during extended sessions

The integrated graphics share the processor die so sustained loads push both compute and graphics through the same cooling solution. Under continuous multi-core work the 3.3 GHz base clock will throttle toward lower frequencies to manage heat. Fan noise becomes audible during long renders or compiles but the chassis remains usable for typical workstation duties.

Questions about this item

What physical space does the 14.0 inch Precision 3470 chassis need on a desk or in a bag?

The 14.0 inch form factor fits standard 14 inch laptop sleeves and briefcase compartments; allow a few centimetres clearance around the hinge and rear vents for airflow.

How is the 256GB SSD installed and what step do people miss?

The SSD is factory-fitted in the internal M.2 slot; the step often missed is enabling BitLocker or another encryption tool after the first Windows 10 Pro boot so the drive is protected from day one.

What maintenance will the 8GB memory and integrated graphics need later?

The 8GB RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded, so keep the OS and drivers current to maintain performance; clean the fan intake annually to avoid thermal throttling on the integrated graphics.
