Mobile workstation for professionals

The Dell Precision 5510 is a 15.6-inch workstation-class laptop built around an Intel Core i7-6820HQ running at 2.70GHz. It ships with 8GB of DDR4 memory and a 180GB SATA 2.5-inch SSD, running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. The non-touch FHD panel at 1920x1080 includes an integrated webcam for video calls.

Practical limits of SATA storage and memory

The 180GB SATA SSD offers faster boot and load times than a mechanical drive, but its capacity fills quickly with large project files or media libraries. The 8GB DDR4 configuration handles typical office and light creative workloads, yet heavier rendering or virtualisation tasks will hit the memory ceiling and require an upgrade.

Straightforward upgrades with one catch

The 2.5-inch drive bay and SODIMM slots are accessible after removing the bottom cover, so storage and memory swaps are routine. The sealed battery and soldered CPU mean those components cannot be changed, and the slim chassis leaves little room for additional cooling if sustained loads run hot.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 180GB SATA SSD or add more capacity later?

The 180GB SATA 2.5" SSD is the installed drive; you can replace it with a larger SATA 2.5" unit if you need more space.

What does the i7-6820HQ 2.70GHz actually deliver in daily work?

Four cores at 2.70GHz handle CAD, video editing and heavy multitasking without slowing the 15.6" FHD workflow.

Is the memory DDR4 and how much can the laptop use?

It comes with 8GB DDR4 SODIMM; the platform supports DDR4 so you can upgrade within the chipset limit.
