Precision 5510 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5510 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation built for engineers and designers who need ISV-certified stability in a thin chassis. It ships new with Windows 10 Pro, a quad-core Intel Core i7-6820HQ processor, 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a 1 TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. The dedicated NVIDIA Quadro M1000M with 2 GB GDDR5 drives professional 3D and CAD workloads.

Quadro M1000M 2 GB GDDR5

The single specification that decides fit is the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M with 2 GB of GDDR5 video memory. This GPU handles entry-level SolidWorks, Revit and Catia assemblies but will limit larger models, GPU-accelerated rendering or modern AI toolkits that demand more VRAM. Buyers who need more graphics memory for complex scenes should look elsewhere.

Thunderbolt 3 and service access

A single Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and an SD card reader covering up to 64 GB provide the physical connections. The 3-cell 56 Wh battery and 130 W barrel adapter handle power. Internally the memory is soldered so the 16 GB capacity cannot be increased; the M.2 SSD slot is user-accessible for storage upgrades. The anti-glare IPS panel and backlit keyboard are fixed components.

Questions about this item

How does the 3.6 GHz turbo speed of the Core i7-6820HQ translate into sustained performance inside this laptop?

The 45 W processor can hit 3.6 GHz on single-threaded bursts, but the 56 Wh battery and slim 11.48 mm chassis limit cooling, so heavy multi-core workloads will settle at lower clocks after a short period.

What does the Thunderbolt 3 port actually let me connect at full speed?

The port carries PCIe and DisplayPort signals, so an external GPU dock or a fast NVMe enclosure will operate at the link's full throughput, while two USB 3.0 Type-A ports handle peripherals simultaneously.

Will a standard 2.5-inch drive fit alongside the existing M.2 SSD?

No — the chassis only provides an M.2 slot for the 1 TB PCIe SSD already installed; there is no 2.5-inch bay or caddy, so storage expansion must use the SD card reader (up to 64 GB) or external Thunderbolt/USB drives.
